She also has done some work, such as answering people's questions, while waiting for school pickup. "Freelancing gives flexibility in scheduling your time, but comes with a responsibility for time management and a need to be able to self-motivate — even on the days it's hard to get going," she said. "Everyone has their own level of acceptable risk, which should be considered carefully in terms of financials, healthcare, and any other benefits that might be traded in." "Then I approached my employer to ask to switch to part-time hours so that I could ease softly into the freelance side," she added.

How to create an iconic brand with Fiverr’s logo maker

I loved the idea that there is a real designer behind the designs… not just AI. There are also pros specifically with being a freelancer as a parent, Almond has found. She said this type of work gives her flexibility with their schedules as needed and to take care of them if they are sick. Almond has found flexibility in deciding the projects to work on another pro to being a freelancer.

"And sometimes it's better to hold out for the people who really will value you because they're going to come in with a better attitude, and that makes for a better working relationship." Almond credits that partly to people looking to freelancers more amid the pandemic. Last year, her Fiverr earnings were nearly $36,000, based on documentation shared with Business Insider. Her total revenue from her self-employed work in 2023 was around 65,400 Canadian dollars, or over $47,500. It can be easy to get carried away and create a complex design with all the things. But you have to remember that people will likely see the design on small mobile devices, packaging, and as a watermark on your graphics. Take a look at the most iconic logos and notice how simplistic they really are.

There can be some negatives that come with being a self-employed freelancer. Almond has found that "the lack of face-to-face interaction" that comes with freelance work can sometimes get lonely. "That wasn't so much there at the beginning because at the beginning it was, kind of, you take what you can get," she said. "And now that I'm more established, I'm able to choose what I want to spend my time on a little bit more." "It's really fun to see the products actually getting launched and hitting the market," she said. For others hoping to identify when to make this lifestyle move, Almond said a main part of it comes down to recognizing both your strengths and weaknesses.

She said she helps clients "create the products that they're going to be able to sell." Based on her Fiverr profile, basic hand sketches for a product concept cost $750. Prices increase to $1,000 for digital sketches with color and $1,250 for 3D mockups.

Recap, Chapter Summary + Review: The House in the Cerulean Sea by T J. Klune

house on the cerulean sea

Linus's assignment is to assess a special orphanage on the island of Marsyas. The master of the orphanage is a man named Arthur Parnassus. There are six children living in the orphanage there, one of whom is called "Lucy" (short for Lucifer), who is the Antichrist. Book review, full book summary and synopsis for The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, a warm-hearted story about kids in an orphanage for magical creatures. "The House in the Cerulean Sea" is a beautiful fantasy story that begins with Linus Baker, a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, who has just been assigned a top-secret case.

Genius is the world’s biggest collection of song lyrics and musical knowledge

They get to Zoe’s house once again, and they have a party. Linus goes to Lucy’s room to see Arthur holding him, trying to beckon him a distressed Lucy out of his nightmare. Lucy is upset to see he has broken some of his favorite records. Linus offers to help fix them, and finally Arthur proses that they go to a record store in the village where they can replace them. On Tuesday, Calliope fancies a chase and runs off with Linus’s tie.

Books

Linus, a man accustomed to rules and structure and proper behavior, is wary of the children at first, but he begins to fall in love with them and their guardian as he spends more time on the island. There is romantic tension between Arthur and Linus, which Linus isn’t sure how to deal with. He also discovers that Arthur and Werner were in a romantic relationship, which explains Werner’s deep interest in the orphanage. There's also Zoe Chapelwhite, an undocumented, adult island sprite who has lived on the island since before the orphanage. She helps to take care of the children in an unofficial capacity. Linus is scared of the children at first, but soon sees that they act much like other kids.

"Sunset People" by Donna Summer

As they go deeper into the forest, Zoe and Arthur put on a game that leads the kids to Zoe’s house in the woods. Sprites are notoriously private and protective of their homes, so Linus know what a big deal it is for Zoe to allow the kids into her home. They happily have lunch there, and Linus listens to Phee and Zoe talk about their sprite-ly powers. When Linus talks about missing his sunflowers at home, Phee grows a small bush daisy, a yellow flower, for him, and he is delighted. After the session, Linus and Arthur talk, and Arthur explains that like the other kids, Lucy just need hope and less prejudice.

Linus is chosen for his strict rule-following and thorough reports, so he's charged with investigating a peculiar foster home of magical children. I read this book for the first time in the early weeks of the pandemic, just after it was published, and found the sweet story to be a simply enjoyable read. I recently picked it up again to revisit the comfort of the magical house in the Cerulean Sea and fondly discovered once more why it comes so highly recommended by readers on TikTok. What it is, is touched on in this short but sweet song.

Top reviews from United Kingdom

house on the cerulean sea

Today, #thehouseintheceruleansea has over 3.9 million views on TikTok, over 22,000 dedicated posts on Instagram, and a staggering 4.45 average rating across over 292,000 reviews on Goodreads. As Matt Nathanson clearly addresses in his song, the only sane time to drive down it is at midnight when no one else is on it. Otherwise, at its worst, expect about 1 hour to travel 15 miles. That night, Lucy tells Linus that he doesn’t want him to leave them, but Linus responds that he has to leave because he has a job to do. After the kids go to sleep Linus walks downstairs to see Zoe and Arthur arguing.

The book ends with an Epilogue in which the mayor of the town notifies them of an unregistered child in need of a home. The orphanage is located on Marsyas Island, isolated from civilization other than a small town on the mainland. It is populated by Arthur Parnassus, the children, and Zoe, an island sprite whose powers are tremendous and closely linked to the island. The town on the mainland is openly hostile towards magical beings, and relations between the townspeople and the orphanage are strained. This tension is exacerbated by the extremity of the children’s magical natures. One of the children, Lucy, is listed in his files as the Antichrist, or the son of the Devil.

Arthur sees how those orphans get shuttled off into orphanages and schools and are essentially taken out of circulation. There are six children there, and they are “problematic”. The master in charge of the orphanage is named Arthur Parnassus, and Linus’s task is to ensure that Mr. Parnassus “continues to be capable of managing them” or if the orphanage should be shut down. The orphanage is located on the island and Linus is to spend one month there, starting tomorrow.

TJ Klune

She looks like a young girl, though she is a forest sprite. Linus recalls that young sprites are more dangerous because they are not in control of their magic. When Linus inquires about Arthur Parnassus’s whereabouts, Talia says from 5 PM to 7 PM the kids do what they want while Arthur works with Lucy. The woman sent to fetch him eventually wakes him up, identifying herself as Ms. Zoe Chapelwhite, the Caretaker of Marsyas Island. As Ms. Chapelwhite drives them to the ferry, she explains that there’s nothing wrong with the children at the orphanage and that they’re not what he thinks. The next morning (on Thursday), Linus boards a train for Marsyas with Calliope in a crate.

Even so, they accept his recommendation that the home remain open. He quickly realizes that he is miserable and grieving the people he left behind, so he makes plans to return. First, though, he steals files from DICOMY to expose the abuses and failures he’s seen in his 17 years as a caseworker. Once he’s prepared and the orphanage is safe, Linus quits his job, packs his meager belongings, and returns to Marsyas Island. After the children hold a brief conference—and communicate a number of adorable demands—Linus is welcomed home. He and Arthur begin a romantic relationship and petition to adopt all six of the children officially.

In the village, Ms. Chapelwhite takes Linus to Merle the Ferryman , who then ferries him to the island and brusquely tells him to get out of the boat as soon as they arrive. An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place―and realizing that family is yours. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages.

At times I found it a little too black-and-white for my tastes, with saintly “good” characters, villainous “bad” characters and pretty much no one in-between. While sweet and upbeat, The House in the Cerulean Sea was lacking in dramatic tension for me, since it was always quite clear how the story would play out. When Linus goes to investigate, Arthur tells Linus that he grew up in a DICOMY orphanage and was abused. When he tried to ask the DICOMY for help, the master of the orphanage intercepted the letter and locked Arthur in the cellar. Arthur burned out cellar trying unsuccessfully to get out.

Downstairs, the kids are gathered and they say that occasionally this happens and it causes their beds or the whole house to shake. He realizes that they are trying to convince him that Lucy is not dangerous, since they are afraid of what he’s going to write in their report. At the Marsyas train station, he waits to be picked up. He has with him files on all six children and Mr. Parnassus. He also has a letter outlining his assignment, along with a warning that he should lock all doors and windows at night for protection. As he browses the first child’s file, he sees a photo of a six-year-old boy, named Lucy.

Meanwhile, TikTok has repeatedly said that it has not and would not share US user data with the Chinese government. “TikTok is an independent platform, with its own leadership team, including a CEO based in Singapore, a COO based in the US and a global head of trust and safety based in Ireland,” the company said. A social media post of a small Bull Terrier mix desperately chasing its owner’s car struck a chord with dog lovers in Long Beach Wednesday. For hourly workers, California law already includes stronger protections than federal statutes, such as overtime pay calculated daily for hours beyond eight per day. For work beyond 12 hours per day, the overtime pay increases to double the worker’s usual hourly rate. The company has good reason to think a legal challenge could be successful, having seen some success in previous legal fights over its operations in the U.S.

What is the timeline for a possible TikTok sale or shutdown?

It’s also unclear whether a manager or a coworker sending a message after hours would be a violation, or only if the company penalizes workers for not responding to after-hours communications, Groff said. The bill calls for employers and employees to establish what counts as “nonworking hours” by written agreement, but doesn’t set any limits on how they define that term. “As exempt employees, we’re paid a salary for doing our work whenever we need to,” she said.

The Social House Promises New Events and Exciting Experiences When It Opens This Spring

It takes a 360° strategy to map global audiences, identify consumers, and authentically break through cultural dialogue. While sporting events, entertainment and fine dining abound, Downtown Los Angeles hasn’t lost its hip factor. Residents and frequent visitors are in the know…tourists and newcomers arrive with the distinct impression that they’ve just been let in on So Cal’s coolest secret. Over the past decade, the pulsating core of the city of Los Angeles has undergone a cultural rebirth that has taken it from its concrete jungle, business center roots to a vibrant, multi-district, must-see spot. Los Angeles-based duo Social House are quickly making a name for themselves thanks to Ariana Grande's "Boyfriend." Here are five things to know about them. City Market Social House boasts 20,000 square feet of newly renovated, fully permitted, contemporary private event space, in a historic warehouse setting.

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and to have access to quality care. That’s why, today, Vice President Harris is announcing two landmark final rules that fulfill the President’s commitment to safety in care, improving access to long-term care and the quality of caregiving jobs. Ensuring that all Americans, including older Americans and people with disabilities, have access to care – including home-based care – that is safe, reliable, and of high quality is an important part of the President’s agenda and a part of the President’s broader commitment to care. The “Ensuring Access to Medicaid Services” final rule, finalized today, will help improve access to home care services as well as improve the quality caregiving jobs through its new provisions for home care. Specifically, the rule will ensure adequate compensation for home care workers by requiring that at least 80 percent of Medicaid payments for home care services go to workers’ wages.

Texas’ ban was challenged last year by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, which argued in a lawsuit that the policy was impeding academic freedom because it extended to public universities. Members of both parties, along with intelligence officials, have worried that Chinese authorities could force ByteDance to hand over American user data or direct the company to suppress or boost TikTok content favorable to its interests. TikTok has denied assertions that it could be used as a tool of the Chinese government and has said it has not shared U.S. user data with Chinese authorities.

The updated TikTok bill comes as part of House Republican speaker Mike Johnson’s foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. “How are government operations, which is a 24/7 function, supposed to run when people can’t contact each other off hours? The bill seems likely to undergo revisions through the legislative process and could ultimately exempt some state and local government agencies such as law enforcement.

In November, a federal judge blocked a Montana law that would ban TikTok use across the state after the company and five content creators who use the platform sued. TikTok has lobbied hard against the legislation, pushing the app’s 170 million U.S. users — many of whom are young — to call Congress and voice opposition. But the ferocity of the pushback angered lawmakers on Capitol Hill, where there is broad concern about Chinese threats to the U.S. and where few members use the platform themselves. "At the stage that the bill is signed, we will move to the courts for a legal challenge," Beckerman, head of public policy for the Americas at TikTok, wrote.

CITY MARKET SOCIAL HOUSE

This policy would also allow states to take into account the unique experiences that small home care providers and providers in rural areas face while ensuring their employees receive their fair share of Medicaid payments and continued training as well as the delivery of quality care. Higher wages will likely reduce turnover, leading to higher quality of care for older adults and people with disabilities across the nation, as studies have shown. States will also be required to be more transparent in how much they pay for home care services and how they set those rates, increasing the accountability for home care providers. Finally, states will have to create a home care rate-setting advisory group made up of beneficiaries, home care workers and other key stakeholders to advise and consult on provider payment rates and direct compensation for direct care workers.

In 2020, federal courts blocked an executive order issued by then-President Trump to ban TikTok after the company sued on the grounds that the order violated free speech and due process rights. His administration brokered a deal that would have had U.S. corporations Oracle and Walmart take a large stake in TikTok. The sale never went through for a number of reasons; one was China, which imposed stricter export controls on its technology providers. The U.S. government has not publicly provided evidence that shows TikTok shared U.S. user data with the Chinese government or tinkered with the company’s popular algorithm, which influences what Americans see. Lexington Social House features a bar, a Club Room, a DIning Room and Garden Patio.

Lawmakers and the White House have expressed concerns that TikTok’s Chinese ownership poses a national security risk because Beijing could use the app to gain access to Americans’ data or run a disinformation campaign. The bill, which would force TikTok’s Chinese parent to sell the popular social media app, faces a difficult path in the Senate. Since mid-March, TikTok has spent $5 million on TV ads opposing the legislation, according to AdImpact, an advertising tracking firm. The ads have included a diverse group of content creators, including a nun, extolling the positive impacts of the platform on their lives and arguing a ban would trample on the 1st Amendment. The company has also encouraged its users to contact Congress, and some lawmakers have received profanity-laced calls. The bill’s quick path through Congress is extraordinary because it targets one company and because Congress has taken a hands-off approach to tech regulation for decades.

The company has indicated that it would likely go to court to try to block the law if it passes, arguing it would deprive the app’s millions of users of their 1st Amendment rights. "The idea that we would give the Communist Party this much of a propaganda tool, as well as the ability to scrape 170 million Americans' personal data, it is a national security risk," Senator Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, said on CBS' "Face the Nation," on Sunday. The announcement Friday afternoon came as protests escalated at the school’s campus in Los Angeles after school officials canceled an address by the student, Asna Tabassum, following complaints by a pro-Israel group that she had engaged in antisemitism in social media posts. Employment lawyers are increasingly hearing from workers about the blurred boundaries around work hours, Mariko Yoshihara, legislative counsel and policy director for the California Employment Lawyers Association, told lawmakers at the April 17 committee hearing.

Los Angeles-based duo Social House are quickly making a name for themselves thanks to Ariana Grande‘s “Boyfriend.” Hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Michael “Mikey” Foster and Charles “Scootie” Anderson first joined forces after moving to Los Angeles. The duo then roomed with other creatives in Sherman Oaks, where they named themselves after the house’s WiFi handle. But, Allen of Eurasia Group noted, that would put the nine-month mark in mid- to late January, which could also coincide with the U.S. presidential inauguration. If former President Donald Trump wins in November, he could very well take a different tack with TikTok, the analyst noted. The bill would give TikTok's owner nine months to arrange a sale, with the potential for an additional three-month grace period, according to a copy of the bill released earlier this month. We'll be in touch with the latest information on how President Biden and his administration are working for the American people, as well as ways you can get involved and help our country build back better.

The California bill would apply to salaried as well as hourly workers, which is a strange policy choice that would complicate compliance, said employment attorney Joy Rosenquist of Littler Mendelson P.C. Salaried employees typically have more flexibility with no strictly set work schedule like the one the bill requires employers to establish. Lawmakers including Representative Mike Gallagher, the Wisconsin Republican who co-led the bill, and Senator Mark Warner, Democrat of Virginia, also say China could use TikTok’s powerful algorithm to feed its users political propaganda. Christopher A. Wray, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Avril Haines, director of national intelligence, have flagged the concerns in the last year. Preservationists and architecture enthusiasts angry about the demolition have taken to social media to voice their disapproval. “Congress cannot take away the rights of over 170 million Americans who use TikTok to express themselves, engage in political advocacy, and access information from around the world,” said Jenna Leventoff, a lawyer for the group.

In Lucy’s presence, the sky suddenly falls to darkness, which scares Linus. But then Arthur tells him to cut it out and things return to normal. Arthur introduces himself, while Linus struggles to regain his authoritative footing after being thrown off-kilter by the children.

“L.A. Story” by Sammy Adams

At the hardware store, Lucy gets excited about the gardening supplies and a spade in particular. A woman in the store looks scared when she recognizes that they are from the island, but Talia calms her fears as she launches into a discussion about her garden. When Talia wants to buy more things than her allowance will allow, Lucy offers to give up some of his allowance, but Linus rejects that idea and pays with a credit card instead. Afterwards, Zoe tells him that as it is the third Saturday of the month, they will be picnicking in the garden for lunch and that it’s Chauncey’s turn to choose the menu. That night, Arthur stops by with a gift, a vintage Zenith record player, which he says was Lucy’s idea.

Driving is a big part of what makes this city what it is, and sometimes it can be miserable. As time passes, Helen tries to convince the villagers that she can sell Marsyas as an inclusive vacation spot, for both humans and magical beings, to bring in more business. This business proposition helps to quiet the village, especially after they stop being paid hush money (to not say anything about the island) from the government.

Among the other children are a wyvern, a gnome, a forest sprite, a shapeshifter, and a gelatinous, tentacled child named Chauncey. As soon as Linus's recommendation to keep the orphanage open is accepted, he know it's where he wants to be. Later, Linus submits an anonymous whistleblower report about the DICOMY's discriminatory practices which results in the EUM all stepping down and being replaced. He also tells his story to a reporter who plans to publish an expose. Soon, Helen brings David, an undocumented yeti boy who needs a home, to the island. Arthur and Linus intend to formally adopt all the children, including David.

As they get out of the van, the children are told to pair up. Arthur has also given them allowances beforehand so they can buy things, and the plan is to meet up a little later at the ice cream parlor. On ferry across to the village, Linus warns Lucy not to go around making foreboding pronouncements to scare people in the village. Talia is here because she’s unique in that all other gnomes are male.

About the Author

This is a fairly simple and “neat” story, probably more suited to people who enjoy YA novels, but I think as long as you’re aware of that going into it, you can enjoy its sweet and uncomplicated tale. I think I’m just someone who tends to prefer more layered novels in general, so this wasn’t entirely to my tastes. The House in the Cerulean Sea is an uncomplicated feel-good book that is full of fantastical creatures and tells a well-meaning, upbeat story about acceptance and inclusivity. It’s the type of book that reminds you of being outside on a sunny day with a cool breeze blowing through. I think The House in the Cerulean Sea could probably have been categorized as a Young Adult novel.

The House in the Cerulean Sea: an uplifting, heart-warming cosy fantasy about found family

If you like upbeat stories, a little romance, fantastical creatures and other magical beings and just a touch of humor, there’s a lot to like about The House in the Cerulean Sea. Being queer himself, Klune believes it's important—now more than ever—to have accurate, positive queer representation in stories. At the end of the day, this is a fantasy novel that can satisfy many readers, even if they're not usually fantasy fans. With heartwarming characters, a comforting aesthetic, and a mind-blowing ending, it's a thoroughly enjoyable read from cover to cover. My absolute favorite part of this book is the appearance of one magical child named Lucy, who is (quite literally) the son of Satan.

"Sunset People" by Donna Summer

He suggests to Ms. Chapelwhite that they send a message back. He writes “No, Thank You” on the raft, and Ms. Chapelwhite harnesses her powers to have the wind to carry the raft back in the other direction. The next morning (on Friday), Linus wakes to find Chauncey hiding under his bed. Chauncey says he’s just there to tell him to come down for breakfast. Linus also prepares his first report to be sent to the DICOMY, where he comments on the “woefully inadequate” information he was given prior to beginning the assigned.

His novel Into This River I Drown won the Lambda Literary Award for Best Gay Romance in 2014. The writing was fine, and the narration is occasionally funny. There is a very sweet (queer) romance component to this novel, which I thought was cute. Also, if you are a cat-lover, I’m pleased to let you know that Calliope the cat makes for a pleasingly feisty side-character in this book.

He goes back to the office and makes a recommendation to allow the orphanage to stay open. He also accuses the DICOMY of running discriminatory orphanages by segregating out the magical beings. Linus Baker is a lonely case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth ("DICOMY"), a governmental organization which manages orphaned magical beings who are minors. His job consists of visiting orphanages to check up on them and then writing up a report. One day, he's called in by the organization's Extremely Upper Management ("EUM") to serve on a month-long classified assignment, reporting directly to one of the four members of EUM, Mr. Charles Werner. Linus and Arthur are both queer characters, but this isn't a central plotline of the story.

This is an unabashedly optimistic and well-meaning story. It’ll warm your heart and perhaps even bring tears to your eyes. If you’re in the mood for an all-good-vibes-type of narrative mixed in with creatures of lore, then this is a good book to consider. It’s a happy, uncomplicated story about inclusivity and discarding prejudices, and it’s a quick and easy read.

Daisy, 11, used her powers to throw a chair at another kid, Marcus. Linus suggests that perhaps some type of “extreme emotion state” triggered her powers. That said, if you like the idea of a breezy, feel-good novel with some romance mixed in, for the right reader this would be a great read. Here are three reasons "The House in the Cerulean Sea" is just as great as everyone says.

If you are dressed in more relaxed attire, you may be seated in our lounge area instead of the main dining rooms. It all started in 1953, when Bern and Gert Laxer, founders of Bern’s Steak House, bought a small café called The Gator Juice Bar. After months of serving breakfast, the couple decided to purchase the Beer Haven Bar, where they salvaged letters from the existing sign, found an additional “s”, and created Bern’s. The “Steak House” came later when the couple discovered that the phone company doesn’t allow single name listings.

The tender steak was served with Bern's signature onion rings and string beans. Instead of the standard baked potato, I substituted Okinawa sweet potatoes to try something new. Most of their standard steaks are in the $50 to $80 range, a fantastic value given soup, salad, and vegetables are included. The dinner menu at Bern's, one of the best restaurants in Tampa, is extensive. I had the chance to see it for myself during a kitchen tour after our meal in 2013.

However, it's the sense of familiarity and welcoming that keeps diners coming back. Some have been with the restaurant for decades, with others making it a multi-generation affair with their kids or relatives joining the fun and creating their own type of tradition. One employee, David Herrick, has been a Bern's staple since July 1985. “I am the last employee left that worked directly with Bern and Gert, through thick and thin,” says Drew. That’s why I do what I do everyday, and why I will continue to do it.” And under David and Johnson's vision, with equally delicious results for years to come. Oreo brownie, crunchy peanut butter, peanut butter mousse, caramel milk chocolate mousse, and peanut butter fudge swirl ice cream conspire to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Bern's menu hits its stride when it comes to the steaks offered. Soups and salads are available a la carte; however, all steak entrees include French onion soup, house salad with your choice of dressing, baked potato, onion rings, and the vegetable of the evening. Appetizers are priced from $14 to $40 and include seafood such as shrimp cocktails and oysters on the half-shell, as well as black truffled steak tartare with quail eggs, escargot, and lump crab cakes. The remaining half-a-million wine bottles are stored off-site in a temperature-controlled warehouse. About 100,000 bottles are stored in the on-site wine cellar; tours have been given in the past, but they put a pause on them in recent years.

Bern began the tours in the 1970s to show diners the work involved in preparing their meals and how to properly store wine. While Bern and Gert have both passed away, their son, David Laxer, continues to run the family business. Today, the restaurant sources as much of its produce as possible from Bern's farm, and microgreens are grown in the kitchen. After improving the space and expanding the menu and operating hours, they renamed their small restaurant Bern and Gert’s Little Midway. My first experience at Bern's was with them in June 2013.

I have fond memories of the Peanut Butter Truffle that I ordered in 2013. Assuming you want dessert and have told your server as much, you'll be led up a staircase (an elevator is also available) to the dessert room. Conscious of everything I intended to eat before (and after) my entree arrived, I went with a relatively small 8-ounce filet mignon, cooked medium rare, with the cognac au poivre sauce. The caviar menu at Bern's Steak House features 16 varieties, from fresh Alaskan salmon for $22 per ounce to Sasanian Imperial Golden Osetra for $200 per ounce. Two hundred varieties of wine are available by the glass, making Bern's an excellent place to sample something new. The atmosphere was as I'd remembered, albeit decorated for Christmas, and the place was packed.

That’s where you’ll slide into your own private wine-cask cubby and try the banana cream cheese pie and a deconstructed chocolate sundae as a pianist plays anything you want.

Over the many decades, Bern and Gert continued to expand their fine dining restaurant, growing it from one to eight dining rooms with a capacity of 350 guests. Instead, the Laxers entered the restaurant business, beginning in 1953 with a luncheonette they bought called The Gator Juice Bar. Bern’s Steak House was created from what was once an ordinary business block on Howard Avenue, containing a grocery, barber shop and dime store. Bern and Gert, with the help of their own carpenters, metalworkers, painters and electricians, built what you now see today. The lobby is all gilded furniture and ruby lights, and there are eight different dining rooms lined with wall-to-wall photos from the founder's travels to Bordeaux, Burgundy, and beyond. Every meat on the menu is given its own paragraph explanation, which sounds like it was written by someone who's an e-commerce copywriter by day and a steak scholar by night. Inspired by a visit with Harry Waugh, director of the French wine estate Chateau Latour, the Laxers opened the Harry Waugh Dessert Room in 1986. Regular dusting and the occasional wipe with a damp cloth can keep them looking new. For scratches or chips, a small touch-up with paint can be sufficient. The durability of black doors, especially when properly maintained, ensures they remain a timeless addition to your home for years to come. The timeless appeal of black doors adds to their value, as they remain stylish and relevant regardless of changing trends in interior design.

Amy Simonyan’s contemporary renditions of luxury and elegance create a unique and personalized style. Inspired by nature, architecture, and people, Amy designs for functionality, comfort, inspirational style, and luxurious appointment, a look she calls Liveable Luxury. Founded by Joshua Rose and Rafael Kalichstein originally as FORM, now known as Citizen Artist, the multidisciplinary design firm creates “artful designs rooted in consciousness, curiosity, and integrity”.

They bring a unique kind of beauty, especially when mixed with such simple materials and muted colors. But if you are remodeling your house, little details such as baseboards and other trim create a cohesive, thoughtful design that will help make you happy you invested in the project to start with. Flat baseboards play against traditional expectations of curving, rounded baseboards and instead feature an entirely flat surface. This works well in houses that lean toward modern but without going completely minimalist.

Led by Kara Smith, KES Studio is a boutique atelier that offers innovative and smart interior design and lifestyle services for design-forward residential clients and one-of-a-kind hospitality environments. Whether it’s from travel, art, and even her clients, Kara is constantly drawing inspiration to create cutting-edge designs. Kim Gordon is a self-taught artist who followed her love of beauty into the business of interior design.

For a bolder statement, a true black or jet black can provide a more dramatic effect. Expect to see a rise in eco-friendly options for black paints and hardware, aligning with a global push towards environmental responsibility. These advancements will not only enhance aesthetics but also support eco-conscious living. Black doors can also play a significant role in Art Deco-inspired interiors. With their bold, geometric shapes and luxurious finishes, these doors can amplify the glamour and opulence characteristic of this style.

Doors are more than entryways; they symbolize transitions between different worlds. A black door not only enhances the aesthetic of a space but also influences the mindset of those who pass through it. Whether leading to a tranquil bedroom or a lively kitchen, it sets the tone for the experience beyond.

This is another great blog post from Woman in Real Life that goes through the process of painting your interior doors black. This blogger and her husband document the entire process with pictures from start to finish from the way to clean the doors before you paint to her thoughts about the black door over time. There are many helpful blogs featuring people who have painted their own interior doors black. Some walk you through the process step-by-step, and others give you valuable advice about why black interior doors work well for them. Hawk & Co creates a captivating synthesis of aesthetics and psychology in each of its interiors. Founded by Summer Jensen, the firm is dedicated to contrasting light and shadow, exquisitely meticulous attention to detail, and a deference to the natural environment.

Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black is one of, if not the most popular black paint color available. This neutral yet bold color makes a perfect contrast to a bright white. Sherwin Williams describes the color as a, “trendy, never-boring black.” They go on to say that you can, “pair it with white for a classic contrast. Since it’s a true black, it works with any undertone.” From what I have seen it’s true that Tricorn Black is as close to true black as you’re gonna get. It’s classic, it’s timeless, and it’s a great choice for bold interior walls and of course black interior doors.

You'll find a taste of native Inuit culture with Nuuk Couture, and you'll discover much more variety at the Nuuk Center, the country's first shopping mall, located next to the Katuaq Cultural Centre. Most of the food in Greenland comes from the sea and is often smoked, dried or salted, and served with sauces. Stop into any local restaurant to feast on Greenland's national dish, suaasat, a thick soup made of meat, potatoes, onion and rice. If you're looking to indulge, try some panertut, dried fish or meat with butter and apples.

Farthest North to Thule and Kane Basin

The tiny island of Uummannaq is one of the few places in the world where local Inuit still follow a traditional lifestyle based on hunting and fishing. Formerly known as Thule (after the forbearers of modern Inuit), Uummannaq is located off the west coast of Greenland. It was founded in 1763 and is home to about 1,200 Inuit, making it the second-largest town in North Greenland. Approximately 80% of the land is covered by an ice sheet that reaches up to 4 km thick. Typically, cruise companies will work with local tour operators to arrange for cultural experiences with Greenlandic people for cruise passengers.

Commemorative starter kits will soon be available in our retail shops — purchase as gifts for avid players or as souvenirs, so that you can always look back on your pickleball cruise memories. The bathroom includes a dual-sink vanity, full-size whirlpool bath and shower, and an additional shower stall. A number of cruise companies have started offering sailings to Greenland in recent years.

Exploring Rugged & Remote Greenland & Iceland

Cruises to the fjords of Greenland are something special and time in each destination should be taken to unwind and witness some of this land’s most dazzling natural experiences. On our journey south, we’ll visit communities where traditions are still alive, including Sisimiut, which lies 25 miles north of the Arctic Circle. This modern town has grown up alongside very ancient remains that date back more than 4,000 years.

You can head into the center of town after a short tender ride while on cruises to Iceland and Greenland. The number of land mammal species is relatively small, but it is still possible to see polar bears, Arctic hares, reindeer, musk oxen and Arctic foxes. Marine mammals such as Fin whale, Minke whale and Humpback whales are frequently seen.

It is in this area that the famed Qilakitsoq mummies were discovered. You will also have time to settle in, enjoy the ship’s state-of-the-art facilities and join the first lectures on Greenland-related topics, including the Citizen Science projects run on board the ship. If you have time, we recommend booking a Pre-Program with us to discover some of Iceland’s natural highlights before your cruise begins. Discover amazing scenery and Arctic wildlife, and enjoy the chance to spot walruses, narwhals, belugas and polar bears. The Expedition Team will share the fascinating geology behind the glacial landforms you’ll find in Greenland in lectures or as you explore them on walks and on landings. They’ll accompany you to a kaffemik – a traditional coffee morning or - take you kayaking in the icy waters.

Really any weather event that could put guests in danger (from the elements or from polar bears) means more time on the ship. South Greenland travel also provides opportunities for adventure. Temperatures in southern Greenland are higher than in the rest of the country, sometimes even reaching up to 20° Celsius during summer. The landscapes are greener and the ground more fertile, with many farms along its coast.

Perhaps it’s obvious that because a lot of it is within the Arctic Circle it’s going to be cold and probably full of icebergs. On a Hurtigruten Expeditions cruise to Greenland you’ll be helping to improve the lives of Greenlandic children. The Hurtigruten Foundation supports the work of local charities and development projects wherever we travel. MS Spitsbergen is named after the crown jewel of Arctic Norway – the Svalbard archipelago and its biggest island, Spitsbergen. Hurtigruten has a long history of travelling to Spitsbergen, beginning in 1896 with the 'Sports Route'.

Even on our Greenland trip, where the expedition guides rejoiced in how much we were able to see and do, we had at least one day where we couldn’t see anything. Pack your patience (and maybe some books to read) and you'll be OK. Greenland has some of the most dramatic changes because of climate change; you can see where glaciers have receded and the crew onboard usually offer sobering facts about how fast that has occurred. But there is still a lot of ice, and it can radically affect your cruise. Imaneq Street is the place to go for traditionally made goods when you visit Nuuk with your cruise. Check out Qiviut to shop for garments knitted from muskox wool, an incredibly warm and soft material.

Stretching approximately 2,800 kilometres (1,750 miles) from north to south and approximately 1,000 kilometres (625 miles) from east to west, Greenland is the world’s biggest island. Some do claim that Australia is a bigger island, but according to international definitions, Australia is regarded as a continent. East Greenland is just a short flight from Iceland, but its culture and landscapes are a world away. In a land dominated by the Ice Cap and impossibly steep mountain ranges, 3,500 people have made it their home. Their culture is born from myths and legends, often expressed in bone and rock carvings, but at the same time it is a globally connected culture with strong hunting roots and an everyday spirit of adventure. Discover Scoresbysund where you can paddle and Zodiac cruise along one of the world’s longest, largest and deepest fjord systems.

The original 'Maud' got her name from the first Queen of modern-day Norway. She also had her namesake in Hurtigruten Expedition’s 1925 flagship, DS Dronning Maud ('DS Queen Maud'). Today, MS Maud is equipped with advanced technology that makes her exceptionally well-suited for expedition cruises in Norway and the British Isles. Qaqortoq is best experienced on foot, whether you’re taking a nature tour through the foothills or gallivanting through the center of town.

Oceanwide’s Polar Class 6 vessel Hondius set sail from her homeport Vlissingen in the Netherlands on Sunday, delivering passengers to her first Arctic voyage of the season. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. Going into cultural exchanges with an open mind is always a good idea -- and doing so can positively enrich your Greenland cruise experience. You might find yourself, as we did, on an excursion to a local café or home where you are served these traditional foods. We erred on the side of being polite, and did sample what was served to us; to do otherwise would have been considered rude to our Inuit host.
